As society continues to reopen post-COVID, local families who are caring for the elderly will be happy to hear that the long-established Dementia Respite Unit (DRU) at Marianhill is once again welcoming guests.
Formerly known as the McCluskey Centre, the DRU was established to provide geriatric assessment and respite care for people living with early to moderate dementia or cognitive impairment.
Currently, guests are welcome Monday to Friday, with plans to reopen on weekends in the near future. Each guest is welcome to stay for up to 90 days per calendar year. Caregivers benefit from knowing that their loved ones are well cared for, so that they can take a break to care for themselves.
Marianhill staff trained in dementia care, guide the DRU residents through specialized daily activities with an aim to stimulate the brain, exercise the body and nurture the soul.
Located within the Mariahill long-term care facility at 600 Cecelia Street in Pembroke, the custom designed unit comprises an activity area, lounge, dining room, outdoor patio and private resident rooms.
To be eligible to stay at the DRU, guests must be able to follow basic instructions, bathe and dress with limited support, and be mobile and able to transfer with the assistance of one staff.
Family and friends are welcome to visit at any time.
“A change in place can be stressful for someone living with dementia,” says Community Services Manager Joanna Chisnell. “So, we make every effort to ensure that our guests and their advocates have the support they need to make life more manageable.”
DRU care is available for $50 per day; ODSP recipients can access the service at a reduced rate.
